PROTECT THE PRAIRIE!

Our story

The most inportant thing about helping wildlife is to have empathy for what you are trying to save.  I would recommend for you to drop whatever you are currently doing and go outside with an open mind and look at all the natural things that are happening around you. Even if you live in a city it works, look for Pigeons eating, House Sparrows calling, and Insects buzzing. No matter what you find, your goal should be to get to understand that interesting things are all around you, and all you have to do is notice them.

After you have gone out a couple of times (I'd recommend early morning) and changed your look about nature to a more excited one, the next steps to helping the environment around you is to rewind your backyard and encourage others to do the same. You can even take it further than that. Below are some things that you can do once you understand that the wonderfulness of the wild is right out your door.

Plant wildflowers

Plant flowers such as

  • Purple Prairie Clover (Dalea purpurea)

  • Dotted Gayfeather (Liatris punctata)

  • Prairie Zinnia (Zinnia grandiflora),

  • Butterfly Weed (Asclepias tuberosa)

  • Black-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia hirta).

Plant Grasses and other plants

Plant grasses such as

  • Blue Grama (Bouteloua gracilis)

  • Buffalograss (Bouteloua dactyloides)

  • Little Bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium)

  • Indian Grass (Sorghastrum nutans)

  • Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum)

  • Prairie Dock (Silphium terebinthinaceum)

  • Scarlet Globemallow (Sphaeralcea columnifera)

  • Pasque Flower (Anemone patens)

Donate Money

Donate money to organizations detected to the conservation of the prairie including:

  • Southern Plains Land Trust (accessible through this website)

  • The Lesser Prairie Chicken Initiative

Visit a lek

Many, many leks are on private property, but you can take a guided tour to some of them. Yes you do pay, but you are watching these birds display which is absolutly a wonderful experience. Also when you pay, those tours use most of that to keep conserving the prairie. If you don't want to book a tour there are some leks off the side of the road and that too, I think, would inspire you to help these birds and the prairie.
